I am applying to osteopathic medical school, and they require that I "shadow" and receive a recommendation from a D.O., but I don't know any personally. What should I do? We're glad you asked! We want you to know that we have all been there and, as part of our commitment to the profession, we understand the need to mentor young professionals and facilitate their entry into medical school. Initiative is one of the traits that we value, so we prefer to have you seek us out. Click here to search for a D.O. in your area, perhaps even considering a specialty area that interests you. Contact one or more physicians and ask for shadowing time. Be prepared to work for approximately one week with the physician and to be interviewed and assessed on everything from your professional appearance and patient demeanor to your technical knowledge. If you know that the physician you are working with does not have clear shadowing and/or recommendation-writing guidelines, please direct him/her to the Pre-Med Screening Guide portion of our website. By doing so, you are almost guaranteed to ensure yourself a thorough and fair evaluation that is accepted and appreciated by osteopathic admissions staff.
